I have spent many years as an expert in transportation studying and also through my work, have traveled railways and roads across India. The National Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) is a key component of the large-scale transport network that developed in Pashchimbanga.
The Birth of NBSTC
Way back in 1960, the government of West Bengal, the originator of the NBSTC, planned it to serve the state’s northern districts. It can be likened to the planting of a small tree which would one day grow so vast as to span both people and regions in different places.
NBSTC’s Mission
NBSTC main purpose? To keep the wheels of North Bengal turning! They operate buses that link cities, towns, and villages. The aspect of public transport is much neglected as we speak to existing users alone. The public bus service system is central to empowering the community and boosting economic growth.
The Fleet and Routes
NBSTC’s fleet representation could rival a vibrant parade of decorated vehicles. There is everything from buses with a regular mode to deluxe coaches among the fleet. Conductors take the buses to every route, namely:
- Siliguri to Kolkata
- Darjeeling to Siliguri
- Jalpaiguri to Kolkata
Challenges and Triumphs
Ruling a state transport company is no easy task. It is like running a marathon of physical hard work to keep up the maintenance of aging vehicles and deal with private operators in a competitive market. But, certainly, they are not giving up without a fight! They are always on the lookout for the next best solution to improve their customer experience as well as their geographical coverage.

NBSTC, in the near future, has a plan to take over eco-friendly buses and digital ticketing platforms. They are enthusiasts of waning technology. They are moving with the times just as they are based at the Gateway but will shortly shift gears!
