It guarantees 100 days of paid work to any and every rural household that requires it. The best part of it is that it is a legal right and not only the government promises to provide it. If the state is unable to offer work, it has to pay unemployment allowances instead of employment. During 2020-2021, MGNREGA provided work to 111 million families in India. That is more than the population of Germany! The government had a budget of 1.11 lakh crore rupees for the project.
