It is like a lifeline for our hardworking farmers remaining away from the pit of financial despair. MSP is more than a mere fancy acronym &#8211; under crucial circumstances it is a savior that has catapulted millions of Indian farmers to new heights, and not just over a short period of time but over many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_ABCs_of_MSP\"><\/span>The ABCs of MSP<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>MSP, or Minimum Support Price, is an initiative by the Central Government to support farmers. It is the lowest price at which the government assures the farmers to buy crops from them. It would be better characterized as a guaranteed price tag for their work done. The government sets MSPs for 23 crops, including rice, wheat, and pulses. To have a loyal customer is like when someone buys your grown products no matter the weather!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_MSP_Works_Its_Magic\"><\/span>How MSP Works Its Magic<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The following is a quick recap of MSP:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) recommends MSPs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs gives the final nod<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>By means of government agencies are they buying crops at MSP whenever the market prices are below it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is more like superheroes coming in when the furies doom prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_MSP_Calculation_Its_Not_Rocket_Science\"><\/span>The MSP Calculation: It&#8217;s Not Rocket Science!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Computing MSP is not as hard as deciphering a rubix cube. The CACP sets aside factors such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Production costs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supply and demand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Market price trends<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inter-crop price parity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>They combine these elements and then formulate a theoretically justified fair MSP. The method involves following a recipe with the only difference being that instead one gets the right recipe, they offer a price that makes the farmer happy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"MSP_A_Double-Edged_Sword\"><\/span>MSP: A Double-Edged Sword?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Wait! MSP is not always a bed of roses. Some aspects are questioned. For example, some people argue it messes up normal market forces while some are in favor of the few who benefit from it. It is that friend! The one who suffers from the best of intentions, incidentally causing the unexpected drama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"MSP_in_Action_A_Real-World_Example\"><\/span>MSP in Action: A Real-World Example<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example of MSP in 2020-21. The MSP for wheat was \u20b91,975 per quintal. A good number of tonnes of wheat were bought by the government at MSP after market prices fell. It is something like &#8211; 389,920,000 kilos of wheat bought! What an expensive grocery bill!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Future_of_MSP_Crystal_Ball_Gazing\"><\/span>The Future of MSP: Crystal Ball Gazing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s going to happen next with MSP? To start off with, there are speculations that it will officially become a legal right. Some people prefer- it being 2 crops for instance. Others propose adjusting the calculation method.
